2 toddlers died in Rialto in an accident where the driver was suspected to be drunk
Two toddlers were killed Sunday night when a drunk driver sped through a red light, causing a three-car crash, police said.
Just after 11:00 p.m. the Rialto Police Department responded to a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Riverside and Walnut streets.
A white Honda Accord with four occupants, including two toddlers ages 3 and 4, was making a left turn onto Walnut Avenue when a blue Dodge Ram pickup speeding southbound on Riverside Avenue ran a red light and T-bone i -Honda, hit a car. tow truck, said Rusty Lamm, public information officer for the Police Department.
The driver of the Dodge Ram, identified by police as Alexis Garcia, 28, of San Bernardino, fled the scene, officials said.
Two toddlers were in car seats, but one was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The 24-year-old female driver and the 25-year-old male driver of the Honda Accord were taken to a trauma center with minor injuries, Lamm said. Officials have not released their names.
Officials said the driver of the tow truck was not injured.
Photos of the incident posted on the Police Department's Instagram account showed children's clothes and toys strewn across the intersection after the incident.
According to Rialto police, officers later found the Dodge Ram and Garcia about a quarter mile from the incident, where the truck appeared to be disabled. He was arrested by police on suspicion of murder, drunken driving and hit and run and booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
Garcia had a passenger in his car at the time of the collision who was not injured, according to police.
