The search for Hannah Kobayashi finally ends after a month of tragedy and uncertainty

The month-long search for Hannah Kobayashi ended this week after her family said they found her safe.

The announcement comes after the Los Angeles Police Department said it tracked a Maui woman to Mexico and that she appeared to be safe, with no signs of foul play.

Here's a timeline of what we know.

November 8

  • Kobayashi arrived at Los Angeles International Airport from Maui and missed his flight to New York City, according to his family. The LAPD said Kobayashi intentionally missed the flight, which his family disputed.
  • Relatives receive cryptic text messages from Kobayashi, suggesting that someone is trying to steal their money and identity.
  • Kobayashi stays overnight in Los Angeles and shows up the next day at the Taschen bookstore near the Grove mall.

Nov. 10

  • Kobayashi is seen in the video attending the LeBron XXII Trial Experience near the Grove and returning to LAX, according to a statement from his family. Kobayashi also posted a black and white photo on Instagram about the event.

Nov. 11

  • Kobayashi is seen talking to a ticket agent at LAX; then boarded the LAX Metro C line at the Airport/Century station near LAX around 9 p.m., his family said.
  • He goes over to the Willowbrook/Rosa Parks Station in South LA and is seen on video from the Pico station near downtown with an unknown person.

Nov. 12

  • Kobayashi reappears on video footage at the Greyhound bus stop at Union Station in downtown LA around 6:30 a.m., according to his family.
  • Just hours later, according to police, Kobayashi entered Mexico via the San Ysidro border. LAPD officials said they reviewed surveillance video from the US Border Patrol on December 2.

Nov. 24

  • Authorities found the body of Kobayashi's father, Ryan, near LAX. He had flown to Los Angeles to help search for his daughter. Authorities have called his death an apparent suicide. Relatives issued a statement saying: “After searching tirelessly throughout Los Angeles for 13 days, Hannah's father, Ryan Kobayashi, tragically took his own life. This loss has increased the family's suffering immeasurably.”

December 3

  • Los Angeles Police Department officials said there was no evidence of criminal activity in Kobayashi's disappearance and that video showed him crossing the border into Mexico.
  • The LAPD described him as a “voluntarily missing person” and said there were no signs of foul play.
  • Kobayashi's family said in a statement that they are not giving up on the investigation and urged law enforcement and the public to “remain focused on finding him and avoid jumping to conclusions.”

  • His family released a statement saying Kobayashi was found safe. “We are incredibly relieved and thankful that Hana has been found safe,” the statement said. “This past month has been unimaginably difficult for our family, and we ask for privacy as we take time to heal and process everything we've been through.”
