Movie Review (no spoilers)
Madame Web, the fourth entry in Sony's Spider-Man Universe brings us a unique take on a whole new team of heroes in the heart of New York. I need to warn readers that if they go to see the movie, keep an open mind. The film is about Madame Web and her role as protector to three young women who will play big roles in the future…hopefully. If you're expecting Peter Parker / Spider-Man to swoop in and pull the trigger, you're going to be sorely disappointed.
I strongly welcome the new take on Spider-Women within Marvel. Since Beyond the Spider-Verse I've thought about the question of whether we'll ever get a chance to see Spider-Women on the big screen and 'How?'. I've always seen Cassandra Webb / Madame Web playing the role of mother and protector. I personally think that Dakota Johnson played her role very well in that sense.
Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced and Celeste O'Connor play the parts of Julia Cornwall, Anya Corazon and Mattie Franklin and bring a breath of fresh air. They are being teased to play a big role in the future, according to the villain of the film. The new villain of the movie, played by Tahar Rahim, gives a fun feel in the beginning but is let down too easily in the end.
Madame Web provided a great introduction to a new character, Madame Web, but sadly doesn't offer any promise of continued connection with any of the movies in the current universe. A few Easter eggs in the movie pointed to another beloved Marvel character, but I would have liked to hear more of Cassie's web and a chance to watch the action of the other heroines of the movie as there are still many stories to be told. Unfortunately there is no post-credits scene, which has been dropped, considering Madame Web is part of the Sony Spider-Man Universe and a continuation is what many are hoping for. I'm curious if we'll be able to see continuity in the future in the form of a sequel or cassie of Cassie, Julia, Mattie and/or Anya in any other production.
I rate this movie 3 out of 5.
The trailer doesn't tell much of the story. Be sure to catch it on a big screen near you.
