A plane crash involving Buffalo Bills quarterback Dion Dawkins on Thursday left one person dead, New York officials said.
Buffalo Niagara International Airport issued an alert around 11:16 a.m. ET that the plane was experiencing mechanical problems as it attempted to land in White Plains, East Aurora Police Chief Patrick Welch said. The flight is from Lansing, Michigan.
About six minutes later, East Aurora dispatch received a call about a small plane crashing in a wooded area, he added.

The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the 1979 Beechcraft A36, died, officials said, but he has not been identified.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it will investigate the accident.
Dawkins, a three-time Pro Bowler, spoke about the accident when he returned to practice.
“I still wonder why things happen in life, but tragedies happen all the time. The big point is I hope the pilot's family is okay. I hope he's doing well because someone lost their life today in an accident,” he said, via Syracuse.com. “I'm glad my family went well.”
The Bills were preparing for Sunday night's game against the New England Patriots.
