After actress Williams received an Emmy in 2019 for her role as Gwen Verdon in Fosse/Verdonsinger Williams said he received many comments from confused fans.
“How come when you tag and congratulate someone, you see that I'm black?” said the singer via Instagram Live. “If you go to my profile, you search for 'Michelle Williams,' I'm black. ok? I am not mixed up; I have nothing to do with Persian, I'm Russian, I'm black.”
During her Emmy speech, actor Williams spoke about equal pay in the industry, which Williams said has received criticism online.
“I'm trying to figure out, 'Why on earth am I being cursed when I comment on Michelle Williams' speech?' what I thought was his truth. I thought it was really cool,” she said. “I thought you were right—I could be wrong. But yeah, I just told this woman a few minutes ago on my Instagram, I said, 'I'm so sorry that my name offended you, but can't you see that I'm black?'
