Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expects Russia to send troops to North Korea from Sunday or Monday.
“This is an obvious rise,” Zelensky said on Friday at X.
He cited intelligence information suggesting that North Korean units will be deployed on the battlefield from October 27 or 28.
The move clearly shows Russian President Vladimir Putin's intention to continue the war, Zelensky said.
He said Putin did not deny reports of the transfer and training of North Korean troops to fight in Ukraine.
“The world can clearly see Russia's true intentions: to continue the war. That is why a systematic and strong response from world leaders is important,” wrote Zelensky.
He said there is a need for visible pressure on Moscow and Pyongyang.
Zelensky's comments came a day after Russia's parliament approved a major partnership deal with North Korea.
Speaking in the Russian city of Kazan, Putin on Thursday dismissed widespread criticism of Pyongyang's military deployment.
“We have never doubted that the leadership of North Korea takes our agreements seriously. What we do and how we will do it under this article is our business,” said Putin.
Germany's Scholz is concerned about the reports
And on Friday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz described reports of North Korean troops being sent to Russia as “very worrying.”
“This cannot be taken lightly,” he told reporters during his trip to India. “Of course this is something that drives the situation forward.”
Scholz said that this action shows that Putin is in big trouble.
It is also a reason to continue fighting for a just peace, he asserted, and to provide “strong, reliable” support for Ukraine.
