When Matt chose not to propose to Rachael in the finale, which aired in March 2021, they left the show as a couple. The two had a private split, however, in February 2021 after he was accused of racism and photos resurfaced of him at an antebellum-themed party on the college grounds. Rachael apologized for her actions twice via Instagram before sitting down with Matt and a guest Emmanuel Acho in time After the Final Rose.
“When he first called me to finish things, my initial reaction was utter confusion. I was blind,” said Rachael in this special. But when that initial reaction wore off, I thought, you know, how strong I thought our relationship was. So for him to end things, like, it must have hurt him a lot. It was hard, because I lost the love of my life.”
After being spotted together in April 2021, Matt and Rachael confirmed to May that they would rekindle their romance. These two were specially told Us July 2023 that they used to speculate about their separation again.
“I think there are so many things we've been through right now that nothing really bothers us. I get it – because we're very much together so whenever our plans don't line up or whenever we have our own things going on, I get where people are coming from,” Rachael said.
Matt, on the other hand, admitted that even his mother used to worry about their relationship status.
“I'll come home and if Rachael isn't there, my mom will say, 'What's going on? Where's Rachael?'” he said Us. I'm like, 'He should have gone home to see his family!' He has his mother and his father and his brother and sister [in Atlanta].”
