Lisa Kudrow Found a Secret Note From Matthew Perry After His Death

Lisa Kudrow find a hidden note from Matthew Perry almost a year after the actor's death.

Kudrow, 61, said Drew Barrymore Tuesday, January 7, episode of The Drew Barrymore Showthat he “just found” a note written to Perry while the pair were working on the final episode of Friends in 2004.

Perry, who died in October 2023 at the age of 54 after suffering from the side effects of ketamine, had put a note inside a cookie jar prop that he had taken from the TV comedy series. “Matthew gave me that at the end of our last episode,” Kudrow told Barrymore, 49. “I just got a note that he brought me. I hadn't even opened it or looked inside it. But yes, he did. He had a book there and I forgot about it.”

Kudrow did not share what was written inside the note, but added, “timing is everything.”

The cookie jar was a common stage Friends set, designed to resemble a clock with the words, “Cookie Time,” written across it. Kudrow, who portrayed the eccentric Phoebe Buffay in the show, which began in September 1994 and spent ten years on TV screens, recalled a touching memory about the pot when it appeared in 2020. “We were filming the scene years before we finished it,” Lisa told Kimmel, 57, on the talk show in May 2020. “My line was, 'Ohhh, I'm late. I'd better go,' and it was too late when I realized I didn't have a watch. When the words came out I went, 'Oh, there's a clock,' and I showed that. [the cookie jar] and he said, 'Oh, look at the time. I better go.'”

Kudrow added that Perry, who played comedian Chandler Bing, approached him after his comment and said, “Did you point to the cookie jar and say, 'Look at the time'? to which Kudrow and Perry laughed.

Perry's death was ruled an accident two months after she was found unresponsive in a hot tub at her Los Angeles home. The actor was pronounced dead on October 28, 2023.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office released a toxicology report concluding that Perry died from the effects of ketamine, drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine (used to treat opioid use) listed as contributing factors.

In an Instagram post to Perry on November 15th of that year, Kudrow wrote, “Thank you for making me laugh so hard at something you said, my muscles hurt, and tears were streaming down my face EVERY DAY. Thank you for your open heart in a six-way relationship that requires compromise. And a lot of 'talking'. Thank you for coming to work healthy and completely sane.”
