Trump says Jack Smith is a 'disgrace' after special counsel resigns from DOJ: 'He left the city empty!'
President-elect Trump has slammed special counsel Jack Smith as a “disgrace” to himself and the country following Smith's resignation from the Justice Department.
Smith's resignation was announced in a court filing on Saturday.
“The Special Counsel completed his work and submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025, and parted ways with the Department on January 10,” a footnote in the filing said.
Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday to criticize Smith for his investigation of the incoming president.

“Desperate Jack Smith was fired today by the DOJ. He is a disgrace to himself, his family, and his country. After spending over $100,000,000 on a witch hunt against TRUMP, he left town empty handed!” Trump wrote.
Smith was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022 to investigate Trump's role in the January 6, 2021, violence at the Capitol and his mishandling of classified documents.
Smith previously served as the acting U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee in 2017 during the first Trump administration.
The resignation comes ahead of the release of Smith's impeachment inquiry into Trump's role in the Capitol attack. A recent court filing indicated that Garland plans to release the report soon, possibly before Trump takes office next week.

“As I have made clear about every Special Counsel that has served since I took office, I am committed to making the Special Counsel's report as public as possible, consistent with the requirements of the law and the Department's policy,” Garland wrote in a recent letter. House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and ranking member Jamie Raskin, D-Md.
An appeals court judge issued a dissenting ruling on Friday prevent release of Smith's report.
After Trump won the presidential election in November, Smith filed to have his charges against the president-elect dismissed.
Smith asked a judge in late November to drop charges against Trump in a case related to the Capitol violence. Prior to that request, Smith filed a motion to leave all the last days in that case, which was expected after Trump won the election.

Trump said after the charges were dropped that he “shouldn't have been brought.”
“These lawsuits, like all the other lawsuits I've been forced to go through, are frivolous and illegal, and should never have been brought,” Trump said in a Truth Social post. “It was a political coup, and a low point in our Country's History that such a thing could happen, and yet, I persevered, against all odds, I WON. DO AMERICA AGAIN!”
