Sudan's military says it captured the key town of Wad Madani from rebels
Sudan's military says it has captured a key city in the country's east, one of its biggest gains in the nearly two-year war against the militants.
Pictures on social media show people cheering in the streets as the army entered the town of Wad Madani.
The leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, admitted to the disappearance in an audio message.
His reception was angry and violent, attributing his defeat to the superiority of the military and the use of Iranian-made drones.
But he vowed to keep fighting until he wins, even if it takes another 20 years.
Wad Madani is the capital of the Al Jazira region, and is 140 kilometers south of the country's capital, Khartoum.
Wad Madani serves as a strategic crossroads, connecting several provinces through major supply roads. It is also a large city near Khartoum.
Sudan has been wracked by war since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the RSF and the Sudanese army.
The RSF continues to control almost all of Sudan's western Darfur region, as well as significant parts of the country's south. Meanwhile, the army controls the north and east, as well as parts of Khartoum.
This war has killed tens of thousands of people. And in what the United Nations calls “one of the most serious human displacement crises,” nearly nine million people have been forced to flee their homes.
The country too to go hungrywith 24.6 million people – almost half the population – in need of emergency food assistance, experts say.
Earlier this month, the US sanctioned the leader of the RSF behind its back He accused this group of killing people.
Officials said he was being punished for his role in atrocities against the Sudanese people over a period of 20 months.
