Star Trek fans these days often complain about the continuity problems that shows like this cause Adoption again Strange New Worldsbut such complaints are not really new. In fact, the various points of the plot about Business started a wave of fan outrage over the constant changes, and those complaints continued with the release of the Kelvinverse films. Historically, fans have blamed the writers for these problems, but it turns out that all of the major problems with Star Trek continuity may have been caused by Captain Picard during the events of Star Trek. First Contact.
Star Trek: First Contact Did it
As you will remember, Star Trek: First Contact there was ongoing concern built right into its narrative with a plot about the Borg returning to 21st century Earth and ruining the timeline as we know it. Captain Picard tracked down the Borg in the past and defeated them while the rest of his crew helped Zefram Cochrane complete the history of the first human warp-speed flight. This flight caught the attention of nearby Vulcans and brought Earth into the wider galaxy, but while the movie suggests that Picard is rooted in history, later continuity problems prove that he may have made things worse.
Before we move on, it's important to focus on some of the Star Trek continuity issues that fans have been dealing with since then. Business started airing in 2001. That plan revived the Vulcan concept into something only Vulcans could do and their society didn't want, which contradicted everything we knew about it. The Original Series. Not all of the timeline changes in Star Trek continuity in the Kelvinverse films make sense because of Nero's invasion, and none of the Enterprise continuity issues make sense at all. However, some fans have noticed that, while rescuing humanity from the Borg, Picard made major changes to the timeline in the year 2063. It is entirely possible that this could explain the changes that seem to be going on Business (beginning in the year 2151) and Star Trek (2009), which occurred in the year 2255.
Picard and the Butterfly Effect
Obviously, this Star Trek theory isn't perfect, but it might explain a lot of the constant changes that audiences complain about. Think of it like the butterfly effect: even small changes Picard made in the past can have a big impact in the future. First Contact it came out five years earlier Business and 13 years before the first Kelvinverse movie, so it would make some kind of sense that we are now seeing a timeline that has been forever changed by Picard's shenanigans, with all the new entertainment on the screen concerned with Picard's previous actions.
This theory will explain the latest news about Star Trek: Discovery continuity ranging from changes to the appearance of Klingons to Spock suddenly having a brilliant Mary Sue sister we've never heard of. It is interesting that Strange New Worlds fully supports this theory thanks to an episode that confirmed that major details such as Khan's date of birth were changed due to the constant interference of time travelers.
Now, it's one thing to have a fun Star Trek theory, but it's another thing for fans to accept this as the reason for all these big changes going on. For better or worse, fans need to fight for more change. Given that the next Trek film will be an original film that seems to revive the first contact with aliens and people joining the United Federation of Planets-events that we have already seen on screen-it seems that the continuation of Trek will not be fully compatible with the decades of historical basis.
Oh well. Maybe the next time Captain Picard visits the past, he can focus on making his franchise meaningful. Or make it fun again. Honestly, we'll accept that!
