A Florida woman who zipped her boyfriend's suitcase to his death for hours has been found guilty of murder

A Florida woman was found guilty of second-degree murder on Friday after authorities say she zipped her boyfriend's suitcase and left it for dead in 2020.

Sarah Boone, now 47, told authorities her boyfriend was trapped in a suitcase and died while playing hide and seek, court records said. A Florida couple had been drinking chardonnay and doing puzzles in their apartment in Winter Park.

They thought it would be “funny” to get into the suitcase as part of the game, according to an arrest affidavit from the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

When Boone was zipping up Jorge Torres Jr., 42, on a blue suitcase, two of his fingers stuck out, so he thought he could open it, according to the affidavit.

He went up to the bed and thought he was going to take himself out of the suitcase and join her, then woke up to find her still inside and not breathing, the affidavit said.

“The evidence presented during the trial included videos found on Boone's phone where Torres could be heard begging for his release while Boone laughed and refused him multiple times,” said a release from State Attorney Andrew Bain's office.

“In the videos he recorded, the victim could be heard telling the accused that he couldn't breathe and asking to be taken out of the suitcase,” the release said. “Boone responded with, 'That's what you get,' 'That's what I hear when you cheat on me' and other taunts.”

“I can't breathe king,” her boyfriend said in a video call.

The video shows Torres pushing the suitcase and trying to get out, the affidavit said.

During the 10-day trial, Boone's defense said he suffered from “Battered Spouse Syndrome” and feared for his life, CNN affiliate WFTV reported. Boone also testified that he thought Torres could get out of the suitcase, the company said.

He testified in his defense for nearly five hours, CNN affiliate WESH reported.

Boone's lawyer said they were very disappointed following the decision, while Torres' family was upset and refused to talk to the media, CNN affiliate WESH reported.

“It's just a shock. He's shocked, you know,” said James Owens, according to WESH. “He felt like, you know, he was defensive, you know.”

Boone is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 2 at 1:30 p.m., according to the state attorney's office.
