A moving winter storm is expected to drop snow across the Northeast on Sunday, with at least half a foot expected from Maryland to Maine, National Weather Service forecasters said Saturday.
The heaviest band of snow is likely to fall north and west of Interstate 95, with up to eight inches possible, according to the weather service, putting large parts of the Northeast under winter storm warnings or winter weather advisories.
The New York metropolitan area, which could receive up to five inches, will be under a winter weather advisory beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday and continuing through Monday morning, the service said.
Parts of upstate New York will be under a winter storm warning during that time and could get seven or eight inches of snow.
Mayor Eric Adams posted on social media that salt spreaders and snow plows are ready for “moderate snow” but asked people to take public transportation if possible.
It's been years since New York City saw as much snow as forecasters predicted this weekend. The few inches of snow that fell in the city at this time last year, covered the route for nearly two years without significant accumulation. The city saw less than eight inches of snow all of last year, and less than three inches of snow between 2022 and 2023.
Some areas may see snowfall rates of one inch per hour at times.
Heavy lake snow is expected on the east coast of the Great Lakes. Parts of Central and Western Michigan could see up to six inches of snow.
Forecasters say the snowstorm will begin in the Appalachian Mountains early Sunday morning, move northeast across the region throughout the day and end Monday morning. From Virginia to Maine, three to six inches of snow is expected along the coast and inland parts of Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
Behind the storm is cold air that is expected to bring several days of cold weather to much of the country, beginning Monday.
The prediction made the organizers of the inauguration of President-elect Donald J. Trump on Monday throw it out of the house. Washington will be under a winter weather advisory starting Sunday, the Weather Service said, and part of Northern Virginia will be under a winter storm warning.
States along the southern coast from east Texas, up to North Carolina, are also expecting snow and freezing rain from Monday through Tuesday.
Parts of Louisiana will see two to four inches of snow, east Texas could get three inches of snow, and northern Alabama can expect temperatures to drop 8 to 12 degrees, the National Weather Service said.
While the Northeast is prone to snow, officials in the South warned their residents about snow and cold and took steps to improve their preparedness.
Gov. Jeff Landry of Louisiana declared a state of emergency for Monday through Thursday to help the area prepare for the rare winter weather.
Six people died as a result of the snow and ice that Kentucky experienced earlier this month, said Andy Beshear, the state's governor. Kentucky, which could get five inches of snow, will have warmer spots available, Mr. Beshear, who also declared a state of emergency.
