TikTok was offline in the US hours before the ban

TikTok is offline in the US, hours before a new law banning the platform goes into effect.

A message from the app for US users said that the TikTok ban has been passed, which means “you can't use TikTok right now”.

“We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to restore TikTok once he takes office,” it reads.

It comes after social media warned it would “go dark” on Sunday unless the outgoing Biden administration gave assurances the ban would not be enforced.

President-elect Donald Trump said he is “very likely” to grant TikTok a 90-day ban once he takes office on Monday.

Users reported that the app had been removed from both Apple and Google's US stores and that TikTok.com was not displaying videos.

“A 90-day extension is something that could be done, because it's appropriate,” Trump told NBC News on Saturday.

“If I decide to do that, I will probably announce it on Monday.”

The White House said it is up to the incoming administration to take action.

“We see no reason for TikTok or other companies to take action in the next few days before the Trump administration takes effect on Monday,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.

The Supreme Court ruling on Friday upheld the law, which was passed in April last year, banning the app from the US unless its China-based parent company, ByteDance, sold the platform on Sunday, which it did not.

TikTok challenged the law, saying it violated free speech protections for its 170 million users in the country.

In prime time in offline social mediacontent creators have been posting videos to say goodbye to their fans.

Creator Nicole Bloomgarden told the BBC that her absence from TikTok will result in a cut in wages.

Another user, Erika Thompson, said the educational content on the forum would be a “huge loss” for the community.

TikTok users were met with a message early Saturday that said the law “will force us to temporarily make our services unavailable. We are working to restore our service in the US as soon as possible.”
