Teri Garr Dies at 79
A famous actress Terry Garr he died at the age of 79.
Garr's manager, Marc Gurvitzconfirmed to CNN that the actor died on Tuesday, October 29, in Los Angeles. He had a long battle with multiple sclerosis (MS). He went public with his diagnosis in 2002.
Garr rose to fame in the 1970s for his acting roles Young Frankenstein. He continued to look around Tootsie, Mr. Mother and more. Garr was nominated for his first Oscar for his role Tootsie. In addition to the film, Garr has also made notable guest appearances on series shows including M*A*S*H, The Bob Newhart Show, The Odd Couple, The Andy Griffith Show and others.
While Garr made a name for himself in the '70s and '80s, he introduced himself to a new generation with his recurring role in Friends. She portrays Phoebe Abbott, the estranged birth mother of Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow).
After years of struggling with MS – a chronic disease that damages the central nervous system – in private, Garr revealed his condition in the hope of spreading awareness.
“I think everybody is scared and scared when they hear something like that,” the actor said in a 2002 CNN interview. “That's because there's a lot of – you know, there's not a lot of information about it. And a lot of people don't know that it's not that bad. I mean, I go on with my life.
In his 2006 memoir, Speedbumps: Breaking It Down With HollywoodGarr opened up about how his illness affected his career.
“Whatever this MS was, the industry wanted no part of it. At first I got angry,” he wrote. “Whatever was happening in my body has been happening for years. It didn't interfere with my work. Then I started thinking that job offers disappeared because I smelled like an actor. It was three difficult things: the mysterious symptoms, my lack of confidence in my acting ability and the reality of being an 'aging' actor.”
In December 2006, Garr suffered a brain aneurysm that left him in a coma for a week. After coming out of the coma, Garr was able to regain his ability to speak and talk after treatment.
Five years later, Garr officially retired from acting but continued to be an MS ambassador.
Garr is survived by his daughter, Molly O'Neilshe also found her ex-husband John O'Neil.
