The nature of illegal immigration is revealed in the shooting of a Jewish man in a Dem-controlled city
The suspect accused of shooting a Jewish man multiple times on his way to a Chicago synagogue last week is an illegal immigrant from Mauritania who was released to the US last year, Fox News has confirmed.
Four law enforcement sources say Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, originally from Mauritania, was apprehended at the Border Patrol's San Diego Sector in March 2023 and later released to the US.
Police say he attacked a 39-year-old male victim Saturday morning in the West Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago. Police said the suspect was identified less than 30 minutes after the shooting, which is when he allegedly fired at responders before officers “returned fire, striking the offender.” The victim, who was wearing Jewish clothing, survived the attack.

Police said they found a weapon at the scene and said Abdallahi was “taken into custody, transported to a local hospital and charged accordingly.” Abdallah faces 14 charges including six attempted murder.
Mauritania is a Muslim majority country in northwest Africa. The Department of Homeland Security considers illegal immigrants from Mauritania to be “special aliens” because of security concerns, and they are subject to additional DHS vetting.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) initially told Fox News Digital that it had no business dealings with him. Law enforcement sources say there is an inmate request for Abdallahi — a request that he be transferred to ICE custody in the event of his release — but “sanctuary” policies in Cook County, Illinois, prevent local authorities from cooperating with it.
Local Jewish leaders believe this is a targeted hate crime, but no hate crimes have been filed at this time.
There has been a huge increase in Mauritanian arrivals, putting pressure on cities like Lockland, Ohio, where more than 3,000 migrants have arrived in a town of 3,500. A Washington Post A June analysis found that more than 15,000 citizens from Mauritania came to the US last year, a 2,800% increase over 2022, when only 543 arrived.
The incident raises ongoing concerns about the possibility of insurgents crossing the southern border, amid the large number of migrants who have encountered border tensions.
