Pretty Little Liars' Sasha Pieterse Says She Will Homeschool Son
Sasha Pieterse she is in full-time motherhood and despite her busy schedule plans to add homeschool teacher to her job soon.
“Both my husband and I were homeschooled,” said Pieterse, 28, on the Wednesday, October 30, episode of the “Between Us Moms” podcast, talking about her partner, Hudson Sheaffer. “We both had very different experiences with it. I really loved you, and he didn't, and I think it all depends on your situation.”
Although there are differing opinions on the matter, Pieterse said the couple had “many reasons” to homeschool their son, Hendrix, who turns four on Wednesday, November 6.
“Another thing is that we travel a lot,” the Pretty Little Liars explained the student. “For us, I don't want to sacrifice his education, but I also don't want to sacrifice not being together as a family.”
The second reason is that Hendrix is a “visual learner” and because of programs like K-12, Pieterse said he can learn his way.
“They send you your science tests, and you have a laptop. And now it's even better as real teachers interact with you and help you,” said the actor on the show. “Everything is very geared towards sighted students, and you can go as fast or as slow as you need to go, and it's a really impressive company and curriculum, and they're a paid school.”
She described the K-12 program as “supporting parents in a way where you don't have to be responsible for your child's education,” noting that she and her husband are “very busy.”
The couple, who tied the knot in May 2018, have their own business and Pieterse acts, produces and writes, so he needs help at school.
Pieterse said Hendrix's education is “very important and I don't want that to happen.” [put that] on the back burner.” That is why he turned to external services where the teacher will “check how you are doing every month” to make sure that the study program is going well.
Pieterse noted that homeschooling is a “soft program” for the family right now, adding that as Hendrix gets older, they may focus on more traditional learning.
“When he gets older he might want to be in sports or theater or gym, or, like, anything that might change it,” she said. “I don't want to stop him from sports or something he likes, you know, based on selfishly wanting him to study at home, so we can always fix it.”
I Your Picture star added, “But at least for the first few years, I think the homeschool route is the way to go.”
Although his son's educational future may change, Pieterse told the audience that he and Sheaffer, 35, “made a decision to be one and do it” when it comes to their family.
He noted that although many built PLL the outcasts, including Troian Bellisario again Shay Mitchell to have more than one child, is not what he wants.
“We always thought we would have more than one. I mean, I'm an only child, but my husband has nine children, which is just crazy,” Pieterse recalled. “I always thought, you know, more than one, and we were totally on the same page.”
When Hendrix was six or seven months old, Pieterse said the plan changed. “I started thinking, 'I don't know if I want another one. I'm very satisfied,'” he recalled. “At that time, he was thinking the same thing, I didn't know either, but he thought I was serious about more than one thing, so he didn't say anything.”
The two eventually discussed their expansion plan and realized they were in the same boat. “We gave it, I think, a good year and a half to process that decision and see if it was something we really wanted,” said Pieterse, revealing that her husband got a vasectomy once they were confident in their choice.
Pieterse called the process “the best thing ever,” saying it “takes the stress out of things.”
Although she's happy with their family of three, Pieterse admitted, “There's a weird part about that where you're like, 'Oh, I'm done having kids.' It just takes you out a little bit, or at least it did for me.”
Despite receiving backlash for their decision, Pieterse is satisfied. “It's perfect for us, and I think that's the thing, right? It's like I don't care about outside influences that way,” he concluded. “I would say, 'No, this is working for us. Our family is complete.' … That's a good feeling.”
