Harris promises to sign bill to 'restore reproductive freedom' as president in Wisconsin speech
Vice President Kamala Harris hinted that she would sign legislation protecting abortion during a speech in Wisconsin on Thursday evening.
“You don't have to give up your faith or deeply held beliefs to consent, the government shouldn't tell you what to do with your body,” Harris said, referring to women.
“When Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom nationwide, as President of the United States, I will proudly sign it into law.”

Harris has made abortion rights a cornerstone of his 2024 campaign, and has spoken about the issue frequently in his role as Vice President Biden.
Democrats are hoping that continued conflict from the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022 will be a strong political contest in November. In previous midterm races, it has been credited in part for helping them retain the Senate and narrowing the margin of victory for Republicans in the House.
Harris said Wednesday evening that Trump would “ban abortion across the country” and similarly impose a ban on contraceptives — both moves the former president has publicly denied.

Moderate GOP lawmakers facing tough re-election battles have insisted they will not support any federal abortion ban.
Abortion-related issues are on the ballot in several states in the November election, including the battleground states of Nevada and Arizona. Democrats are hoping it will inspire voters who are usually apathetic to the polls to get out and vote green.

“Ours is a fight for the future, and it's a fight for freedom. Freedom, like the basic freedom of a woman to make her own decisions about her body and not have her government tell her what to do,” Harris said Wednesday.
The Republican National Committee (RNC) criticized Harris before his appearance on the battlefield in Wisconsin, with Chairman Michael Whatley in a statement, “Harris' vision for Wisconsin is an even more liberal version of the last four years. Kamala Harris broke Wisconsin's economy, but President Trump will fix it.”
