It was more than 60 years ago this month that the Dodgers defeated the Chicago White Sox and won their first World Series in front of more than 90,000 baseball fans at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
At that time, the Coliseum lit its torch to honor the team's victory, and now, after the Dodgers won their eighth World Series Championship, the Coliseum has lit its torch again. And for the next two nights, the peristyle of the Coliseum will be illuminated with blue light.
Since the Dodgers' comeback victory Wednesday night, some of LA County's buildings and attractions have been finding ways to celebrate the Boys of the Sky, from the Pacific Wheel on Santa Monica's Pier to LA City Hall.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, whose father, Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, helped bring the Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles in 1958, asked for the Coliseum light to be turned on.
“I thought it would be appropriate to light the torch of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to celebrate the Dodgers' victory in the place where the team played its first World Series winning season,” said Hahn. “We love our team.
“Every room in Los Angeles is celebrating today,” he said.
High in the hills of Griffith Park, the letter “D” in the Hollywood sign glowed blue.
In Inglewood, a spokesperson for SoFi Stadium said the building's roof Thursday night will display “2024 World Series Champions LA Dodger” in green light. The same message was already displayed on its Samsung infinity screen inside the arena.
The celebrations will culminate with a victory parade through the city Friday and various festivities at Dodger Stadium. Expect to see a lot of blue.
