At least 36 people died after the bus fell into the gorge

At least 36 people have been killed and 27 injured after a bus fell into a gorge in northern India's Uttarakhand state.

Officials said there were 44 people on board when the driver lost control and the bus fell into a 50 meter deep ditch in Marchula, Almora district of the province.

The state government has ordered an investigation into the accident.

Buses are the main mode of transport in the Himalayan state and accidents are not uncommon.

The bus was on its way to Ramnagar district of the state when the accident happened on Monday morning.

Photos and videos from the area showed a badly damaged car rolling down the hill.

A number of passengers died on the spot, while the injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Rescue operations are ongoing.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

He announced compensation of 200,000 rupees ($2,378; £1,834) to the families of the dead and 50,000 rupees to the injured.

The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, also announced financial assistance to the victims and their families.

Buses are a common mode of transportation in India, especially between small towns and districts. However, operators often violate safety regulations and overbook.

About 160,000 people die in road accidents in India every year – the highest number in the world – mainly due to speeding and reckless driving.
