GOP Rep. Monica De La Cruz is expected to win re-election in Texas, against Democrat Michelle Vallejo

Republican Representative Monica De La Cruz is expected to defeat Democratic challenger Michelle Vallejo in Texas' 15th Congressional District on Tuesday.

The 2024 election is not the first time that De La Cruz and Vallejo have faced each other.

De La Cruz and Vallejo are competing in the 2022 midterm elections, with De La Cruz defeating Vallejo to become the first Republican to represent the traditionally blue state since 1901.

In 2020, De La Cruz ran against incumbent Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez Jr. but he was defeated.

The seat was redrawn following the 2020 census and includes the South Texas region along the US-Mexico border in the Rio Grande Valley.

Both De La Cruz and Vallejo are children of Mexican immigrants.

In 2022, Vallejo received the support of liberal politicians such as Sens. Bernie Sanders, Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and is a strong supporter of abortion rights and Medicare for all.

The district has a majority of Hispanic voters.

In the 118th Congress, De La Cruz served on the House Agriculture Committee, the House Committee on Financial Services and is a member of several caucuses, including the Bipartisan Women's Caucus, of which she is vice chair.
