Christina Applegate has opened up about his daily battles with Multiple Sclerosis.
Speaking on the Tuesday, November 5, episode of his “MeSsy” podcast, which he co-hosts Jamie-Lynn Siglerwho also has an autoimmune disease, Applegate, 52, said she experiences sharp pains “every day.”
“I lay in bed screaming,” Applegate said while explaining how the autoimmune disease manifests itself differently from person to person. “Like, sharp pains, aching, squeezing.”
She noted that these symptoms affect her “every day” of her life, adding that sometimes she can't pick up her phone or TV remote control because MS takes over her hands. “I can't open bottles now,” Applegate told Sigler, 43, and the pair's guest, Rory Kandelfounder of Rory's Bakehouse in Napa.
In accordance with Mayo ClinicMS causes a breakdown of the “protective covering of the nerves,” and can lead to numbness, weakness, difficulty walking, impaired vision and additional symptoms.
Applegate's candid health update comes after she revealed in April that she had a relapse of MS this year. “I'll be honest with you, I need to buy stock in Cottonelle because I haven't showered in three weeks,” Applegate said on the April 2 episode of “Messy.” The actress continued at the time, “I can't stand in my shower. There's no f-ing way.”
Applegate was diagnosed with MS in 2021, taking to social media at the time to share the news publicly. “Hello friends. A few months ago I was diagnosed with MS,” he tweeted in August of that year. “It's been a strange journey. But I am supported by people I know who also have this condition. It's been a tough road. But as we all know, the road continues. Unless others are blocking it.”
He continued, “As one of my friends once said 'We wake up and take the action shown.' And that's what I do. So now I'm asking for privacy. As I go through this thing. Thank you so much.”
Although Applegate has experienced a series of debilitating symptoms since her diagnosis, she has seen the light again, revealing a week after her April 2 podcast episode that her health has exceeded her expectations while visiting family in the Netherlands and Paris.
“I ended up walking. I couldn't believe it. “The first few days I was walking with my cane I started to feel like it was holding me back a little in a weird way,” said Applegate.
Before going on vacation, he had not exceeded “2,000 steps a day” for two years. “Suddenly, it took a lot of unusual strength and I ended up walking without my cane the whole time and I was surprised by it,” he explained at the time.
Applegate launched his podcast with Sigler in March, telling Good Morning America at the time, “I've been playing a character called Christina for 40 years, which I wanted everyone to think I was because it's easy. But [the podcast] kind of my coming out party.”
