Chicago PD's Marina Squerciati talks to Burgess, the Voight Detective Dynamic
Kim Burgess is officially in her detective prime Chicago PD – but that doesn't mean he's ready to be Hank Voight's right-hand man.
Warning: Spoilers from Chicago PD season 12, episode 6.
“I would like to stay in that role, but differently,” Marina Squerciatiwho plays Burgess, has only been told Us Weekly On Monday, November 4, of her character's interaction with Voight (Jason Beghe) after becoming an investigator. “I don't want to be his reference. I don't want to fill a hole.”
Scquerciati, 40, explained that Burgess “doesn't feel like he is [her] father,” noting that many of Voight's former executives had strong relationships with him. (Sophia BushErin Lindsay was partially raised by Voight and his late wife, while Tracy Spiridakos' Hailey Upton became Voight's daughter-in-law after her son's death.)
“I feel like equality isn't the right word, but let me just use it here in that, like, they really respect each other and love each other,” Scerciati said of Burgess and his manager. “It would be interesting to explore now that he has a detective role, what their relationship might be.”
Wednesday, November 6, episode of Chicago PD, Burgess took his written and oral detective tests before being hired by an active duty detective to see if he would pass and be promoted.
When Burgess takes on an incident connected to a previous Intelligence case, he turns to his team to help him solve it. While there were a few hiccups along the way – and Burgess ended up nearly killed after falling out with his mentor Suarez (Elizabeth Rodriguez) — realized how important Voight was to his growth. (Suarez said Voight always covered Burgess's “ass” and the rest of his team, which he said softened Burgess up a bit.)
“I think it's the first time he understands the kind of shield that Voight has on the team,” Squerciati said. Usreferring to Detective Suarez's jab. “He never understood that he would become a police officer because of who Voight is.”
The actor added that Suarez criticizes “the kind of robbery [her] one of the joys of his win” when he made a detective.
Moving forward, Squerciati noted that Burgess will have “a nagging voice” about that safety net in the back of his mind now that he's a detective in the Bureau of Investigation. Even with doubts, Scerciati said Us that there won't be much change in the way Burgess works with her fiance, Adam Ruzek (Patrick Flueger), or the whole group.
“You know when people have a good relationship and get married [and] people are like, 'What's different?' And he's like, 'Nothing.' It's exactly the same,” explained Squerciati. “The team is very strong, and Burgess is very strong, I don't think anything will change.”
Burgess, however, will have “more power.” Scerciati noted that his longtime collaborators, including Ruzek and Kevin Atwater (Royce Hawkins), “strong enough” to have a “bad boss.”
He teased that the boys “maybe go have a beer sometime, [say] like, 'Yo, today you got a little on your skis. [And] I'll be like, 'Okay, you're right.' But other than that [it won’t change].”
Squerciati admitted that “it would be bad” if Burgess became “power hungry” as soon as he got his badge, confirming that the actor is “strong” and “who he is” after the promotion.
Chicago PD airs on NBC Wednesdays at 10 pm ET.
