3 have been charged over the death of One Direction star Liam Payne in Argentina
Prosecutors in Argentina have charged three people with the death of the former One direction singer Liam Payne, officials said Thursday.
Payne, 31, died on October 16 when he died he fell from the balcony at the Casa Sur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires.
One person, who authorities say spent time with Payne every day while in Buenos Aires, is charged with aggravated assault, a charge that carries a sentence of five to 15 years in prison, according to news releases. The National Office of Criminal Prosecution and Corrections in Argentina was released on Thursday.
Two other suspects are accused of supplying Payne with drugs, including cocaine, and are charged with two counts of drug trafficking each. Officials did not say what the sentence would be for those charges.
One of the people charged with supplying drugs is a hotel employee, the prosecutor's office said. The three accused have been notified of the charges, the prosecutor's office said, and are not allowed to leave the country.
None of the suspects have been identified by name.
The release also stated that Payne died from the fall, and did not jump from the balcony. Officials had not previously confirmed the nature of the incident, but the prosecutor's office said Payne may have been “totally unconscious or experiencing a significant decline or loss of consciousness” at the time of the fall.
“For the prosecutors, this situation will also issue a decision that the victim acted voluntarily or willingly,” said the prosecutor's office.
I investigation included raids of nine homes in the region and dozens of interviews with hotel staff, Payne's family and friends and experts in the fields of medicine, biochemistry and psychiatry, the prosecutor's office said. Investigators also reviewed more than 800 hours of footage from the hotel and public streets and conducted a forensic analysis of Payne's cellphone to review his digital history in the time leading up to his death.
An autopsy was also conducted. Afterwards, Payne's body was returned to his father, Geoff Paynewho was in Argentina from the next day the death of a son.
Toxicology tests conducted as part of the autopsy showed Payne had “traces” of drug use in his system. There was a “residue” of alcohol, cocaine and antidepressants, the prosecutor's office said. Medical experts found that Payne only had accidents from his own fall.
All information gathered by investigators was summarized in a 180-page report presented to Judge Laura Bruniard, who presides over criminal cases. Bruniard pleaded guilty to the charges against the three people, but the investigation will continue, the prosecutor's office said, as investigators continue to try to access Payne's other belongings.
