Parents have been arrested for trying to kill their 17-year-old daughter for refusing an arranged marriage, court records show
Two parents in Washington allegedly tried to strangle their 17-year-old daughter to death in an “honor killing” attempt after she refused an arranged marriage to an older man, police said.
Ihsan Ali and his wife, Zahraa Ali, were charged with attempted murder outside the child's school, Timberline High School in Lacey, Washington.
The father allegedly also punched his daughter's boyfriend in the face outside the school The New York Post reports.
The daughter has not been identified, but she told the police that “her father had recently threatened to kill her for refusing to marry an older man in another country,” said the police report.
On October 18, the girl ran away from home to seek help from her high school staff. His parents followed him to school and attacked him outside the school, whereupon his father began choking him “until he passed out.”
Some students, including the girl's boyfriend, tried to take her father away from her, according to the police.
Video first obtained by Fox 13 Seattle showed the father choking the girl to the ground and shoving her face in the dirt as students yelled at her to stop. The child's mother allegedly tried to strangle him.
Good Samaritan Josh Wagner told KOMO he was driving by when he saw the alleged attack. He stopped and approached the scene, thinking that he would end the fight between the youths, but he found the parents allegedly attacking their daughter.
Wagner wrestled with Ihsan and held him down until the police arrived at the scene.
“It was very annoying. All the kids were screaming, screaming,” he told KOMO.
When her father left her, it is said that the girl ran away with her boyfriend and returned to the school's main office when she shouted that her father was trying to kill her. This incident caused the school to be closed and the school staff refused to allow the girl's parents to enter the building.
The girl's boyfriend told KOMO that he had had previous problems with his girlfriend's family until he felt it necessary to get a temporary protection order from them.
The daughter's school has arranged a safe place for her to stay while the police investigate the incident.
