Move over, Chris Hansen – 20 kids in southern California just killed a suspected animal.
Riverside County deputies responded to a tip Friday that an adult was meeting a minor for sex at Nicolas Road Park in Temecula, according to the release. When they got there around 4:25 p.m., a group of 20 kids were filming suspect William Vandenbush, 46, of Homeland.
Authorities did not say how old the children were, how much they planned the sting or how they first met Vandenbush.
However, an investigation by law enforcement confirmed that Vandenbush posted nude photos and agreed to meet a minor in a park for sexual purposes, and was arrested on several charges.
It's not clear whether the young detectives were inspired by Hansen's NBC television series, “To Catch a Predator,” in which suspected sex offenders are caught on hidden cameras arriving at a haunted house to have sex with a minor.
The department warned against efforts to monitor the gathering or investigate possible suspects. The Ministry pointed out that it is not only safe but it can make the investigation difficult if the evidence is not handled properly.
“This action has put the safety of everyone around the park at risk,” the release said.
“Law enforcement officers who investigate these types of heinous crimes have special training and follow certain protocols to ensure proper investigations, preservation of evidence, and public safety,” the release said. “Following these specific principles, the investigation is not interrupted and ensures that a thorough investigation is presented to their district attorney's office for prosecution.”
Local acts have seen some success in getting their suspects prosecuted in recent years, but some have failed to meet prosecutors' high standards, KTLA reports.
Vandenbush was booked into the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center for sending dangerous material to a minor, contacting a minor for sexual purposes and arranging to meet a minor for sexual purposes. He has not posted $25,000 bail as of Monday afternoon and is awaiting arraignment Wednesday at the Murrieta Southwest Justice Center, according to jail records.
