Zoo says Ukrainian lions get 'second chance'
Two lionesses rescued from a war zone in Ukraine have arrived at Five Sisters Zoo in West Lothian.
Luna and Plusza – both four years old – arrived at the zoo on Wednesday night.
The sisters were first rescued in 2022 in an area of eastern Ukraine that had been hit by heavy bombing.
Zoo officials said the lions came from Belgium and will be given a place to “recover and thrive” during their challenging journey.
Luna and Plusza first traveled through the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and Poland to the Natuurhulpcentrum in Belgium.
Gary Curran, head of carnivores at Five Sisters Zoo, said the zoo wants to support animals that have had difficult experiences and give them a peaceful life.
He said: “The safe arrival of Luna and Plusza underscores our commitment to giving lions a second chance at life.”
Earlier this year, the zoo rescued an Asian black bear, Yampil, after it also survived the bombings in Ukraine.
However, the 12-year-old bear died in July following an anesthetic procedure.
