The old man accused of “brutally” killing his roommate's dog and the killer had an extensive criminal record

An elderly man has been arrested in connection with what police called the “brutal murder” of his roommate and his dog and then used credit cards to try to flee the country.

Just before two o'clock in the afternoon on Nov. 18, Austin Police Department officers were called to a home in reference to a deceased person.

When the police arrived, they found a woman, later identified as Linda Mlsna 83, and a dog dead in the house. MLSNA could not be heard for six days, according to court documents obtained by FOX 7 Austin.

APD Homicide Det. Israel Pena said at a Nov. 21 news conference, a neighbor had come home and found “a smell consistent with rot and flies or insects in the windows of the house.”

A family member who lives in the area also reported that he entered the house and found Mlsna in the basement with a dead dog on top of him, court documents said.

When Austin police entered the home, they also found broken furniture and more evidence of a disturbance, which Pena said confirms the police's belief that her death was a homicide.

The initial investigation revealed that Mlsna's roommate, Jack Moore, 84, was not at home and no one knew where he was. However, investigators later learned that Moore allegedly used Msna's credit cards to make fraudulent purchases after her death.

Police were eventually able to locate Moore and arrest him on a restraining order.

During an interview with detectives, Moore allegedly admitted to killing Msna and her dog, took her credit cards and made a plan to flee the country.

Moore also told the police that he was afraid that Mlsna's family would take him to a nursing home because of his age and he said he knew that he wanted to live in that home until he died. He also admitted that he killed his dog because he wanted to have it forever, according to an arrest affidavit via FOX 7.

A search warrant for the home revealed blood in multiple areas and Mlsna's cell phone, which showed multiple notification messages from various financial institutions regarding suspicious purchases made with her credit cards, over an eight-day period at one store. , the report read.

Mlsna's family told police that Moore had been stealing money from her.

Police went to the store linked to the theft for surveillance video and found that Moore had purchased 36 gift cards for 21 different transactions. The police said that most of the purchases were made when Mlsna was known to be dead.

Moore was arrested by the US Marshals for violating parole by stealing a car from an apartment three and a half kilometers from Mlsna's home.

A search of the apartment where Moore was arrested turned up more than 30 gift cards and receipts, credit cards issued to Msna and women's jewelry, the affidavit said.

It was also revealed during the investigation that Moore had an extensive criminal record, including bank robberies and prison time.

Moore was arrested on a charge of involuntary manslaughter and a parole violation for the carjacking. He is currently being held in the Travis County Jail on a $1 million bond.

According to police, the case is being investigated as Austin's 63rd homicide in 2024.
