A 16-year-old bicyclist was struck and killed in a traffic accident in Exposition Park, authorities said.

A 16-year-old bicyclist was struck and killed by a sedan Friday afternoon in Exposition Park in a possible traffic accident, authorities said.

The driver fled the scene after the incident, which happened in the BMO Stadium parking lot in downtown Los Angeles just after 4 p.m., according to authorities.

About 40 bicyclists were traveling south on Figueroa Street, just north of Martin Luther King Boulevard, when an altercation broke out between the group and the driver of a sedan, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Dan Keene told reporters at the scene. The driver then followed the group through the hole in the fence and into the parking lot, where he hit the victim, Keene said. The boy died at the scene, the Highway Patrol said in a press release.

No arrests had been made as of Saturday afternoon, and a description of the driver and vehicle was not available.

Keene said this incident should never have happened and urged the driver to come back and talk to the investigators. “No parent should have to go through that,” she said.
