Why Iconic Bad Lines Were Cut From Film

They are not badadapted from the Broadway show of the same inspired name Gregory Maguirenovel, cuts several key lines from the stage show including “The Wizard will see you now” and “We'll be late for Wizomania.” It appears, director Jon M. Chu he had good reason to leave those parts of the conversation in the final text.

“If you don't have a live audience to play with, some jokes don't work well,” Chu, 45, told me. Variety in an interview published on Saturday, November 23. “I remember when [Ariana Grande] read that we didn't have the line 'The Wizard will see you now!' There was a reason for that; they were more developed in the area.”

He went on to say, “In practice we didn't have them and every time that moment happened they would sing anyway. Ari was like, 'I promise you, we have to have it.' So I said, 'Okay, let me see.' We built so there are two entrances now, but it was worth it. There were debates all the time.”

Grande, 31, plays the beautiful witch Galinda/Glinda, in the season Cynthia Erivo takes the mantle of the evil Elphaba.

Chu also tried to keep up with Galinda/Glinda's voice “It's nice to see me, isn't it? There is no need to answer. That is speaking.” However, the joke was not the same when Grande said it on camera without a live audience.

“The joke didn't last. “Not because of the way he was doing it, but because there are no listeners to give an answer,” explained Chu. “We included Ozian's negative reaction, but it was meta, it was too early. It was very scary to cut that because, like a line in the Bible.”

“I will say, because I did it [already] cut Part Two, [it] you are a doozy. You'll get meat,” Chu teased Variety. “I didn't know where we would be in the community right now. It is eight times more important than ever when you are talking about the truth and consequences of making right or wrong choices. It's intense.”
