Hannah Kobayashi didn't talk about Mexico's travel plans despite the crossing: family

The family of missing Hawaii woman, Hannah Kobayashi, will continue to search for the 30-year-old woman despite police claims that the woman, who has not heard from family and friends for 21 days, crossed the border into Mexico of her own free will.

On Monday, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell said surveillance footage and other evidence showed Kobayashi entering Mexico on foot, alone and with luggage, at the San Ysidro port of entry on Nov. 12.

Larie Pidgeon, Kobayashi's aunt, who served as the family's spokesperson during their three-week search, said her “concern for Hana has not diminished.”

“Hannah never mentioned any plans to go to Mexico, and no one in her life knew she intended to go there,” he wrote in a statement to Fox News Digital on Tuesday. “What scares me the most is that he's completely cut off from his phone, social media and his world – he's not this person.”

“I can't shake the last messages he sent friends and family, which I've replayed in my mind a thousand times,” he continued. “I tried to make sense but I couldn't.”

There was no evidence that he was being trafficked or [was] victim of foul play,” McDonnell said.

“We urge Ms. Kobayashi to contact her family, law enforcement or US Embassy staff to let us know she is safe,” he said. “He has a right to his privacy and we respect his choice, but we also understand the concern his loved ones feel about him. A simple message can reassure those who care about him.”

Kobayashi was scheduled to take a connecting flight to New York on November 8, 42 minutes past 11 a.m., but did not board the plane despite a detailed itinerary and a booked hotel room in New York City. His family is still not sure why.

Earlier this week, McDonnell said investigators had determined that Kobayashi “intentionally” missed his flight, which his family disputed.

LA Union Station footage obtained by Fox 11 shows Kobayashi lugging a pink suitcase and wearing a sweatshirt, buying a bus ticket to the southern border on Nov. 11.

Earlier, Pidgeon told Fox News Digital that friends and family received several strange messages from Kobayashi after he missed his flight that was not on his usual schedule. He texted his friend that he was “tricked out of all my money” and that he had been tricked by “someone I thought I loved.”

“He [wrote she] he had a spiritual awakening, that he was concerned about the matrix. It was just really weird messages,” Pidgeon said previously. “And it went from, 'Hey, I can't wait to see you guys. I love you. Everything is very good.'

Pidgeon said that, although the LAPD considers the case closed, the search for his family is “far from over,” telling Fox News Digital that they are trying to “create a safe and effective plan” to contact him in Mexico.

“I will not stop until I confirm, face to face, that he is safe and making these decisions of his own free will, [and]… until I know my niece is safe… and in good spirits,” she wrote, adding that the family had hired a private investigator to help.

While thanking the police for their “hard work and resources that they tirelessly dedicated to this search,” the missing woman's aunt also said the family was not informed of the news until hours before the LAPD's press conference on Monday.

“I want to be completely transparent: I was not informed about this until a few hours before the press conference,” he said. “I haven't seen the pictures myself, but I hope the LAPD did everything they could to make sure it was him.”

Pidgeon and Kobayashi's father, Ryan Kobayashi – who was found dead of an apparent suicide after jumping from a parking lot on Nov. 24.[dying] heartbroken” – previously told Fox News Digital that LAPD detectives didn't contact them until Nov. 22, 11 days after her family was reported missing.

The LAPD was not immediately available for comment.
