Ryan Reynolds Was Scared of an 'Absent' Father While Making the Deadpool Films

Creating a healthy work-life balance can be tricky for anyone, especially when you write and star in one of the biggest superhero movie franchises.

Ryan Reynolds teased what the future holds for Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe while talking to him Andrew Garfield for Variety“Actors to Actors” in the series on Monday, December 9. In particular, he confided that he wanted to be there with his wife. Blake LivelyThe four children could have a say in when and where fans will see Deadpool next.

“My feeling is that the character works very well in two ways, one of scarcity and surprise,” he said while talking about the success of Deadpool and Wolverinewhich was released in July. “It's been six years since the last one [2018’s Deadpool 2]and part of the reason is that it swallows my whole life. You can't take your hand off the stick all the way through development, through production after marketing and promotion, and then, you're like [stop].”

Talking about his children, he added: “I never want to be absent, and I don't want to miss certain things.” Me, I like to die inside when I see their faces and they have a competition or they have a sports thing or something and I miss it. “

Reynolds and Lively, who married in 2012, are parents to daughters James, 9, Inez, 8, and Betty, 5, and son Olin, born in February 2023. Reynolds turned Deadpool and Wolverine in a family affair by allowing his wife and children to make cameos as Deadpool variants Ladypool, Kidpool and Babypool.

Deadpool and Wolverine marked Reynolds' third solo outing as a verbal merc and saw him meet another version Hugh JackmanWolverine to help save his universe from extinction. The film dominated the summer, earning more than $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office, according to Forbes. It has since become the highest R-rated film of all time.

Despite the film's success, Reynolds admitted that he doesn't know when Deadpool will return. “I know that [director] Shawn [Levy] and I made the film to have a beginning, a middle and an end and to be a complete thing instead of selling another,” he said. “And I think, kind of, it's important sometimes to make room for a movie to be a movie.”

As for Deadpool's next screen appearance, Reynolds said the character may step back from the limelight. “I see Deadpool as more of a supporting character than the main character [character]institution,” he shared. “We put him in because that's what they want, but you can't put him in a position unless you take everything away from him. You have to create a situation where he's the lowest person, and I don't think I can do that again. So, if he comes back, it will be in someone else's film.”

Reynolds has a potential project in mind that he would like to see Deadpool appear in. “Channing Tatum he was very excited to play Gambit [in Deadpool & Wolverine]and I would happily be the fifth banana in his film or anyone else's,” he said.

Fans will have to wait and see when Deadpool will return to the MCU. But for now, Reynolds is holding viewers with another interesting work. “I spend a year writing,” he teased in an interview with her Variety last month. “I'm writing my own movie, Hugh and Shawn doing that is not Marvel.”
