2 students stabbed at SoCal high school; the other attacker was 14 years old, the source said
Two students were stabbed at school on Monday at Verdugo Hills High School in Tujunga.
Both students were hospitalized with injuries believed to be life-threatening, and the suspect was arrested by police, according to a school district report.
The stabbing happened around 1:45 p.m., said Los Angeles Police Department Chief Tony Im.
Im said that about four people were involved in the attack on the two students and fled the area in a car after the violence. The police officer confirmed that two students were taken to the hospital for treatment, although he did not have information about their conditions.
A 17-year-old boy was injured or injured in the head, shoulder and back, said a source with knowledge of the incident who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to release information. The second student was injured after he intervened to help the first, said the source.
One of the attackers, who may be the one with the knife, is 14 years old, the source reported.
There is concern that the incident is related to gangs, the source said.
The school district declined to confirm or deny additional information.
Earlier in the school year, a shooting left a 17-year-old boy injured just outside Granada Hills Charter High School, a public school within the LA Unified area but not run by the district.
Also, during the first week of school, a student was stabbed on the campus of Franklin High School in Highland Park. The youth who was shot and stabbed required hospitalization, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
There have also been many incidents of loaded and unloaded firearms being found among students.
At Verdugo Hills, the first notification to parents about Monday's stabbing went out at 2:24 p.m.
“There was an incident that occurred on our campus that required our school to go into 'lockdown' at 2:08 p.m.,” the warning said.
In a closed environment, all gates and doors to the school are locked, and students must stay in a secure and supervised area, such as a classroom.
The next notification was timestamped at 3:07 p.m
“Our school remains closed at this time,” the update said. “We used the procedures to close the schools due to the incident of violence among our students at 2:00 pm.
The usual dismissal time for school is 3:36 pm
The third notice went out at 3:50 p.m
“The closure of our facility has been lifted and our school is still open and safe to teach.” Los Angeles School Police “stated that the police operation has been completed, and the suspect has been taken into custody.”
The alert also included general information about the victims: “Two students were injured but received immediate medical attention by responding officers and on-site paramedics. After that, the victims were taken to a local hospital for further treatment.”
As per standard procedure, the district will send mental health workers to the campus as well as neighborhood school patrol officers and campus police “for the rest of the week,” the update said.
