The organization that fights for the rights of journalists says that 104 media workers have been killed this year. Gaza stands out for the second year
BRUSSELS (AP) – The International Federation of Journalists said Tuesday that 104 journalists and media workers have been killed so far in 2024, more than half of them killed during the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.
The group said that since the war began on October 7, 2023, at least 138 have been killed, including 55 Palestinian media workers in a calendar year.
In addition to the number of deaths worldwide, the IFJ said that the number of journalists in prison is increasing as it has increased to 520, compared to 427 last year.

“These sad figures show once again how fragile the freedom of the press is and how dangerous and dangerous the profession of journalism is,” said IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger, adding that the dire situation came at a critical time.
“The public's need for information is very real at a time when authoritarian regimes are developing around the world,” he said. When it comes to arrests, the group said that China and Hong Kong have kept 135 journalists in prison.
Overall, the number of people who died was still expected to increase before the end of the year and by the end of 2023 the number was 129, IFJ said.
