The former Ivy League computer scientist accused of shooting and killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson had been suffering from back pain and falls following back surgery, according to reports.
Luigi Mangione, 26, told his roommates that he suffers from chronic back pain and blood clots, according to CivilBeat, a Honolulu publication.
Mangione stayed there for at least six months in 2022, according to roommate RJ Martin, who told the newspaper that Mangione's lower back problems plagued him for years due to a misaligned spine that could sometimes compress the spine.

Mangione told his roommate he had the surgery after leaving the Surfbreak co-op they lived in, then “went on the radio.”
Martin, who could not immediately be reached for comment, told the New York Times that the University of Pennsylvania alumnus' pain was so severe that it was sometimes so debilitating that it interfered with his dating life.
“He knew that dating and getting close to his back health was impossible,” he told this newspaper. “I remember him telling me that, and my heart just broke.”
Forbes dug up a now-defunct Reddit account allegedly written by Mangione in which he discussed symptoms of spondylolisthesis, a painful condition that involves the vertebrae slipping. An archived version shows that she described “numbness/tingling” in her toes and lower back pain. He advised others to strengthen their muscles to relieve pressure on the back.

“When all other means of communication fail, violence is necessary for survival,” he wrote. “You may not like his methods, but to see things from his point of view, it is not terrorism, it is war and rebellion.”

Martin told CivilBeat that Mangione picked up Kaczynski's manifesto at their local book club. The reading was so painful to “read” that it ended up splitting the club, he told the media. But Mangione, writing on Goodreads, felt it foretold the future.
“It's easy to quickly and thoughtlessly brush this off like a madman's scroll, to avoid having to deal with some of the problems it points to,” he wrote. “But it's impossible to ignore how powerful many of his predictions about modern society have been.”

Surveillance images from the hostel he was staying in near Central Park have gone viral on the internet as police begin a manhunt for the suspect.
