German development minister lends aid to Ukrainians amid harsh winter
German Development Minister Svenja Schulze was in Ukraine on Thursday to applaud Berlin's efforts to help citizens in the cold months ahead.
“I went to Ukraine to deliver our winter package,” said the minister when he arrived in the capital, Kiev.
He said that during the more than 1,000 days of the war, Russia's aim was to disrupt the electricity supply so that people would be left sitting in the cold and in the dark. “That's why we've also raised additional funds to help rebuild the electricity supply here.”
He added that this is important for one to be able to survive in winter temperatures.
During his visit, he plans to hold talks with government representatives and civil society organizations. He also wants to visit many reconstruction projects. “I want to see for myself here that the money goes where it is really needed,” he said.
This is Schulze's second trip to Kiev this year and fourth to Ukraine since the February 2022 invasion of Russia.
