A California infant has died amid an outbreak of listeria tied to Yu Shang food products

A California infant has died from listeria during an outbreak linked to some ready-to-eat meat and processed poultry products.

Eleven people in four states have been infected with the virus, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and nine of them have been hospitalized. Seven cases were reported in California, two in Illinois, and one each in New York and New Jersey.

Heath authorities did not provide additional information about the infant who died in California, including where she lived in the state.

The recalled products are distributed by Yu Shang Food Inc. of Spartanburg, SC, and is labeled as manufactured in the United States and requires refrigeration. More than 72,000 pounds of meat and poultry products have also been recalled, the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said.

Routine testing of Yu Shang Food products revealed listeria bacteria, the Food Safety and Inspection Service said. A full list of affected products is available here. The recalled products should be returned or thrown away, health officials said, and residents should clean any refrigerators, surfaces or containers they may have come into contact with.

According to the CDC, people with listeria can start feeling sick two weeks after eating contaminated food. Symptoms can begin the same day as eating contaminated food, or as long as 10 weeks later.

Symptoms can include headache, muscle aches, fever, confusion, loss of balance, neck stiffness and diarrhea.

Those most at risk of contracting listeria are the elderly, pregnant women, newborns and those with weakened immune systems.

“For pregnant women, infection can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth or life-threatening infection in the newborn,” said the Food and Safety Inspection Service.

People infected with listeria can be treated with antibiotics.
