A company presents a unique solution to a major challenge with electric trucks – here's how it could impact the transportation industry

A French infrastructure specialist has partnered with an electric vehicle charging solutions company to provide a new way to power almost half of trucks. Proviridis and Kempower have partnered to develop an underground charging option that can easily integrate with existing truck depots, according to Electrek.

Many existing depots do not have a facility to install conventional chargers or “dump lines” for charging small trucks. As a result, Proviridis and Kempower developed a flexible solution: high-power underground cabinets. The charging lines are connected by rigid steel pipe, allowing depots with limited space to provide charging for semi trucks.

In the driver's model, the pipe is covered in bright yellow, making it easier for drivers to see. Located a few yards away is a 600 kW power cabinet, one of Kempower's space-saving solutions.

By creating a charging setup that takes up less space than conventional stations, Proviridis and Kempower are making electric charging more accessible to small truck depots. As more charging stations become available, companies will be encouraged to convert their delivery vehicles to electric.

Compared to their diesel counterparts, electric trucks have significantly lower carbon emissions over their lifetime, according to the EPA. And they don't emit tailpipe pollutants once they hit the road, helping to reduce the overall amount of harmful, planet-warming gases entering the atmosphere.

This charging solution could provide an exciting opportunity for truck depots across the country to expand their EV charging stations.

“The product lasts a long time in a wide range of temperatures and conditions, requires little ventilation, and can cater to a wide range of customer needs,” Proviridis technical director Olivier Verdu told Electrek. “These are the features that perfectly position the Kempower solution for this type of charging configuration in the transportation environment.”
