A convicted SoCal serial killer was convicted of killing two women in 1986
A convicted killer from the Bay Area has been convicted of killing two young Northern California women in 1986 after a DNA match linked him to the case, authorities said.
An Alameda County jury last week found David Misch, 63, guilty of murdering best friends Jennifer Duey and Michelle Xavier, prosecutors said. The bodies of naked women, shot and stabbed, were found in a remote area of the city of Fremont on February 2, 1986.
Evidence presented at trial showed that DNA found under Duey's fingernails in 2001 belonged to Misch, authorities said. In 2003, while serving a life sentence for a murder he committed in December 1989, Misch told Fremont police that he had seen two young women being held at gunpoint and tried to save them. That was his explanation for the presence of his DNA, the Alameda County District Attorney's office said.
Also presented as evidence was a license plate number written on one of the victim's hands that matched Misch's.
“Misch was indicted by this office for 32 years after killing Jennifer Duey and Michelle Xavier. He was found guilty by the judge after four years,” said Chief Asst. The district. He said. Roy Roberts said in a statement. “This sentence is proof of the commitment of this office to seek justice for the victims and their families, even if it takes decades. I wish we could have brought justice to both families sooner.”
Xavier, 18, and Duey, 20, were Fremont residents who had planned a pizza and movie night the night they were killed, the San Jose Mercury News reported. Prosecutors argued during the trial that Misch, a convicted rapist, robbed both victims after he had the misfortune of crossing his path the night they were killed.
Misch faces 50 years to life after being convicted of the two murders. He is scheduled to be sentenced on January 2.
Misch also faces charges of kidnapping and murder that are believed to have occurred in Hayward in 1989. Investigators suspect that Misch kidnapped and killed Michaela Garecht, a 9-year-old Hayward girl who was riding a scooter to the market with a friend. buying snacks and soda.
Misch is accused of moving his scooter next to his car, then got out of it and kidnapped him when he was going to pick it up. The part of the palm written on the scooter matched Misch, police said. Garecht's body has never been found.
