A drunk driver killed a Texas girl who died as her family struggled to cope with her loss

A Texas family is picking up the pieces after a suspected drunk driver killed their 7-year-old daughter in a fatal crash that left her mother injured.

Joel Gonzalez Chacin, 41, who is accused of being the drunk driver accused of causing the fatal accident, appeared in court on Tuesday morning.

He has been charged with intoxication manslaughter in the death of Ivory Smith, a 2nd grader at Klenk Elementary School in Houston.

The fatal crash also left Smith's mother, Christina Quainoo, seriously injured.

Authorities confirmed to Fox News Digital that the 41-year-old was drunk when he hit Christina and her young daughter on Sunday, December 1 at 2:45 am.

Police said Chacin took photos of the scene “instead of helping” and then drove off. Police say the two victims were a few minutes away from home.

His bond was set at $150,000.00 by the 232nd District Court.

“Please keep the family and loved ones of the child victim in your prayers this holiday season,” Constable Mark Herman of Harris County said in a social media post.

On GoFundMe, the family remembered 7-year-old Ivory as full of joy and light.

“Elephant brought so much light into our lives in the short time he was with us, and we will forever cherish the joy and love he freely gave,” his family said.

“As we deal with this great loss, we are faced with the difficult reality of seeking justice for Ivory,” they said.

The family said that Quainoo is still recovering for a long time as he is dealing with the tragic loss of his young daughter.

“He will have a long road to recovery and needs everyone's support,” the GoFundMe said. “Please keep our family and my father, Keion Smith, in your prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
