A fire at the Moss Landing Power Plant causes evacuations and the closure of Highway 1
Monterey County sent out an emergency plan alert Thursday evening to say the North County Fire Department is responding to a fire at the Moss Landing Power Plant in Central California and other areas are under evacuation orders.
The Moss County Sheriff's Office has issued emergency evacuation orders for the Vistra power plant fire in the areas of Moss Landing South of Elkhorn Slough, North of Molera Road and Monterey Dunes Way, and West of Castroville Blvd and Elk Horn Road.
The extent of the fire is not yet known, but authorities have closed Highway 1 and warned residents of Moss Landing behind the facility to evacuate their homes, according to Monterey County officials.

“Out of an abundance of caution, NCFPD is urging residents of Zones MRY-B047 and MRY-B053 to close windows and doors and shut off air systems until further notice. Please avoid the area to allow emergency vehicles to respond,” the statement said. said.

There is currently no estimated time for reopening. Currently, northbound traffic is being diverted to Highway 183, and southbound to Struve Road.

A temporary evacuation center has been set up at the Castroville Recreation Center (located at 11261 Crane St., Castroville) to evacuate those in need.
The cause of the fire has not yet been found and will be investigated once it is extinguished.
