A second man accused of drugging Liam Payne before his death has surrendered to Argentine police
The second of the two accused of supplying drugs British singer Liam Paynewho drowned while leaving a third-floor hotel room in Buenos Aires last year, has surrendered to authorities, Argentine police said Tuesday.
David Ezequiel Pereyra, 21, presented himself on Monday to the police in Barracas, south of Buenos Aires, a police source told AFP.
Pereyra was working at the Casa Sur hotel in the Argentine capital where the former One Direction singer died last October.
Last week, police arrested 24-year-old hotel waiter Brian Paiz – Pereyra is also accused of supplying drugs to Payne. Paiz's attorney confirmed to CBS News that he was arrested. A toxicology test after Payne's death found that he had “traces of alcohol, cocaine and an antidepressant” in his system.
A total of five were charged on the death of a pop singer. Three of them – Payne's representative in Argentina, the hotel manager and the reception manager – face charges of involuntary manslaughter.
Prosecutors said last month the hotel manager and receptionist allowed Payne to be taken to his room, which had a balcony, instead of keeping him in a safe place, with company, until medical help arrived.
Hotel staff called the police on the day to report “an aggressive male who may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol,” a Buenos Aires police spokesman said in a statement to CBS News on October 16, the day Payne died.
Payne had spoken publicly about battling substance abuse and dealing with fame at a young age.
His death prompted a worldwide outpouring of grief from family, teammates and fans, as well as gatherings of thousands of mourners around the world.
One of the world's highest-grossing live acts of the 2010s, One Direction went on an undeclared hiatus in 2016. Payne enjoyed some solo success before his career was put on hold.
