A South Carolina man was killed in a crash involving two classic cars, officials said
One person was killed Friday when two vintage vehicles collided on a highway in the Midlands, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The accident happened at noon in Sumter County, said Cpl. David Jones.
A 1985 Oshkosh truck was driving westbound on US 378, according to Jones. Near the intersection of Brewington Road, the truck collided with a 1990 Honda motorcycle that was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes, Jones said.
The motorcyclist died at the scene, according to Jones.
Florence County resident Ray Prosser, 73, is the man who died in what Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker called an accident.
Jones said the truck driver was not injured, and no other injuries were reported.
It was not heard whether Prosser was wearing a helmet, or whether the truck driver was wearing a seat belt.
Information about why the motorcycle swerved into oncoming traffic was not available, but the crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol and the coroner's office. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Baker said.
As of October 20, at least 785 people will die on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in accidents in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 16 people died in accidents in Sumter County in 2024, according to DPS data. It was reported that 30 people died in this region in 2023, DPS said.
