Carlos Alcaraz enjoyed a successful season, winning two majors (Roland Garros and Wimbledon), the ATP Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells and the ATP 500 in Beijing. But his biggest rival, Jannik Sinner, has already won the ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF honors and Alcaraz is not shy about admitting that the Italian had a better year.
“Absolutely. I mean, [it] It doesn't matter that I have beaten Jannik three times. Maybe I didn't play good tennis in some tournaments. “My winning percentage this year is really high, but Jannik is another level this year,” said Alcaraz. “[He has earned] more than 91 percent of the win this year. Just like that [a] few players have done this before.
“But yes, I think so [all] players want consistency throughout the year. In every tournament you will play, you want to go as far or as far as possible. That is my goal for the next year. In the tournaments where I didn't play well or didn't get where I wanted to, I just tried to do that.”
Alcaraz has been consistent, winning 83.6 percent (51-10) of his matches in 2024 according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. Sosoni recently agreed, claiming 91.5% (65-6) of his games.
Although the battle to end the year is over, Alcaraz is determined to finish his season on a high note, starting this week at the Rolex Paris Masters, where he is coming off second.
“I have important competitions coming up, I want to go far [in] and play good tennis,” Alcaraz said. “The most important thing I have to think about is understanding the goals for the end of the year. I want to finish in second place [PIF ATP] Levels. That means I have to play tennis at a high level and be fresh mentally in order to make good results in previous tournaments.”
Second-ranked Alcaraz leads third-ranked Alexander Zverev by 395 points in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, which serves as a barometer for the year-end PIF ATP Rankings. There's plenty of tennis left, starting with the ATP Masters 1000 main event this week.
The Spaniard has a 4-3 record against Bercy and is yet to advance to the quarter-finals. He will start his competition with Nicolas Jarry or Lorenzo Sonego.
“I haven't played tennis well here in this tournament. “Maybe at the end of the year, I was tired,” said Alcaraz. “I think I have prepared myself very well this year. So I don't know, you know… Coming into this year, I think I feel different. I know what I have to do. I have been doing good work lately. So I think I am ready to make good results or at least go further than last year. That I think is not really difficult.”
