Alec Baldwin says 'Rust' will always be 'overshadowed' by death of cinematographer
Alec Baldwin refused to see the final cut of “Rust” because of the abuse of many people, including his family members, related to the film.
Baldwin, who plays Harland Rust in the Western directed by Joel Souza, was initially charged with involuntary manslaughter in the shooting of photographer Halyna Hutchins.
A New Mexico judge dismissed a lawsuit against the “30 Rock” actor in July following what legal experts described to Fox News Digital as a “joke of legal errors” in the case.
“Obviously this is the hardest thing I've ever gone through in my life,” Baldwin told Variety while in town for the Torino Film Festival in the northern Italian city of Turin. Baldwin, 66, skipped the film's premiere last week at the Camerimage Festival in Poland.

“More than the victims themselves, the thing that hurts me the most is what it did to my wife,” Baldwin said of his partner of 12 years, Hilaria Baldwin. The couple has seven young children together, and a reality television show about their family is set to premiere in 2025 on the TLC network.

“My wife suffered a lot because of this. There was a lot of pain. If you are married to someone else and everything was going well, and we had seven children … and the floor is falling. It is very scary and very. disturbing.”
“Apart from the victims themselves, the thing that hurts me the most is what he did to my wife. My wife is very traumatized by this. It is very painful.”
He added, “And we're trying to put wind in our sails, to get away from these things. Because film doesn't stand for itself. It's always going to be clouded by this.”

Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison for the murder. death of Halyna Hutchins. The photographer died on October 21, 2021 after the gun Baldwin was carrying was discharged on the set of the movie “Rust”.
Souza was also shot by a bullet fired from Baldwin's weapon during the incident at Bonanza Creek Ranch.
“We are trying to put wind in our sails, to move away from this thing. Because the film does not stand alone. It will always be covered by this.”
Baldwin also admitted to the outlet that finishing the film had a negative impact on his life, and remains limited in what he can talk about pending trial of a lawsuit filed by Hutchins' family.
“To finish the film – and that's all I can say about it because I have another one waiting [civil] case – we went to Montana,” Baldwin said. “All my doctors told me 'don't go' – psychiatrists, cardiologists. I mean, I got really sick after that for a while, physically exhausted and sick. But I'm gone.”
Production finished filming in Montana, where Baldwin said he “gave up” his money.

“I gave them back the money from the budget allocation. I gave up all my money,” said Baldwin. “I gave everything to her husband. He owns the film. Her husband, I believe, is the sole owner of the film, although I could be wrong. Everything was done with that in mind.”

Baldwin is still facing a civil lawsuit filed by Hutchins' family. The actor's legal team filed a request for a temporary suspension of the case on November 19, one day before the start of “Rust” in Poland.

Attorney Gloria Allred filed a lawsuit alleging battery, loss of consortium, emotional abuse and more on behalf of Hutchins' mother, sister and father in February 2023.
“To finish the film – and that's all I can say about it because I still have another one waiting [civil] case – we went to Montana. All my doctors told me 'don't go' – psychiatrists, cardiologists. I mean, I got really sick after that for a while, physically exhausted and sick. But I'm gone.”
The lawsuit, which named Baldwin, the producers of “Rust” and other additional defendants, said Hutchins was financially responsible for his family and had plans to come with them to live in America.

He has yet to see the final episode of the Western flick but is hopeful that the investors will return with the film.

“I got a bad cut early on, before everything got sticky and hard,” Baldwin said. “So I didn't see the movie. But, again, I hope that the movie is released, that it comes out. That it returns its money to its investors.
“You never want these people who believe in your project to be left high and dry. And I hope the film sells, and that he [Halyna’s husband] he gets his money. We all made a deal with him, and we all want to follow it. But this idea that people – who shall remain nameless – say, 'You are benefiting from this!' That's not fair at all.”
