Alec Baldwin's Rust premieres in Poland with a dedication to Halyna Hutchins
Alec Baldwin's Western Rust had its world premiere on Wednesday at a Polish film festival dedicated to filmmaker Halyna Hutchins, who was shot and killed in an accident three years ago.
Organizers called for a minute's silence before screening the film, which opened to a packed house at the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography Camerimage in the city of Torun, and received a standing ovation at the end.
Baldwin, the lead actor and co-producer, was pointing a gun at Hutchins during a rehearsal outside Santa Fe, NM, in October 2021 when the gun went off, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza. Baldwin said he pulled back the hammer — but not the trigger — and the revolver fired.
Souza launched the film at the event, a popular industry event dedicated to film photography. He told the audience that initially after the accident he would not have thought about continuing to produce, or work on a film set or write again.
“It just hurt a lot,” she said.
But Hutchins' husband, Matthew, wanted the film finished, and became executive producer.
“It was important to her that people who know and love Halyna see her last work,” said Souza. The task was to “preserve every outline I could get of him, and honor his last work.”
Rust is the story of a 13-year-old boy who is sentenced to be hanged after accidentally shooting and killing a rancher. He continues to run with his estranged grandfather, played by Baldwin. It includes scene after scene of the shooting.
Bianca Cline, an accomplished cinematographer, said Hutchins created the look and feel of the film, and shot more than half of it. He read Hutchins' notes to respect his opinion.
Hutchins, 42, was a fledgling Ukrainian photographer and mother of a young son. He grew up in a remote Soviet military base and worked on documentary films in Eastern Europe before studying film in Los Angeles and embarking on a promising filmmaking career.
The shooting victim's mother refused to attend
Before the premiere, Hutchins' mother Olga Solovey, who is suing Baldwin and the production, said she refused to attend and watch the film as an attempt by Baldwin to “unfairly profit” from her daughter's death. Baldwin was also absent.
“It was always my hope to meet my daughter in Poland to watch her work live on screen. Unfortunately, that was taken away from me when Alec Baldwin pulled out his gun and killed my daughter,” Solovey said in a statement released by her attorney. , Gloria Allred, and posted to CBC News.

Filmmaker Rachel Mason, a friend of Hutchins who was hired by Matthew Hutchins to make a documentary about his late wife, told the audience that Solovey told her he wanted the film finished because of the importance of the project to his daughter.
Mason also described all those who continued to work on the film after the disaster set as “heroes.”
“You can just hear and see the trauma they went through,” she said.
“Halyna didn't get the chance to make the big films she was expected to make, which we all knew she would make. Rust it was that movie. Rust he was going to change his life but instead it took his life. And people who don't feel the pain of what a lot of people have made a movie about,” Mason said.
“I really hope the world can understand that it was an act of courage to finish this film.”
A New Mexico judge dismissed a manslaughter charge against Baldwin in the shooting. The case was dropped mid-trial due to allegations that police and prosecutors withheld evidence from the defendants.
The film's gunman, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, received a maximum sentence of 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter. The judge found that his negligence was a violent crime.
