An Oklahoma measure seeks to make school district superintendents an elected position

Oklahoma will consider a new initiative to make the role of school district superintendent an elected position in response to a series of controversial cases involving school leaders, Fox News Digital has learned.

There have been allegations and news reports about several issues: refusing to remove “pornographic books” from school libraries, the dismissal of a teacher for failing to comply with the COVID-19 face mask obligation, and media coverage of “empty. [being] done” in response to reports that the school's football coach was bragging about winning sex with parents.

In 2021, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt called the firing of teachers who don't like masks a “travesty” and said their skills are needed more than ever.

“This is about a school district not following state law — this is not a debate about masks,” he said, after the Oklahoma City district reportedly fired several teachers, adding that the state had prevented the shooting.

In February, Oklahoma State Superintendent of Schools Ryan Walters — an elected official himself — threatened to decertify schools in Edmond, Oklahoma, if they didn't remove the books “The Glass Castle” and “Kite Runner” from the top. school libraries.

Walters called the inaction “an abrogation of accountability,” although Edmond's superintendent said the state does not have the authority to remove books based on the district's 1997 policy.

In another incident, in Edmond, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of neighboring Texas, among others, blasted videos showing part of a school bag where students were touching each other's toes.

In a public statement, school officials appeared to celebrate the occasion:

“This afternoon, Deer Creek High School announced a total of $152,830.38 was raised for Not Your Average Joe Coffee, an organization created to 'encourage our community to include students and adults with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities,'” school staff wrote.

“All participants in the meeting were students who registered for the game(s) they played in advance. No Deer Creek faculty or staff participated in any games during this Clash of Class meeting,” the final part of the statement read.

Walters called the rally “dirty,” and Cruz called it “child abuse.”

In another district across the Arkansas line, former Muldrow Superintendent Leon Ashlock resigned after driving drunk and crashing a school bus on Creek Turnpike. Two 100-proof bottles of cinnamon schnapps were found in its console, according to KOCO.

Walters told Fox News Digital on Wednesday that a case involving the school's response to the criminal acts of an athletic director and a student also drew his attention.

“Even in a state as strong as Oklahoma, where voters have made it clear they want progressive policies for students left out of public schools, we continue to see administrators violate their will, ignore their concerns, and refuse to take the necessary action to improve educational outcomes while protecting Oklahoma's children. ,” Walters said.

Walters called the law a logical solution to efforts to improve the education of the State's Sooner children.

Walters previously made headlines when he led his country in being the first to find appropriate funds to provide Bibles to every school. The official said the move disrupts the curriculum and gives students a “historical text” that the founders used to form their government.
