While critics may hate their bobby vibe, NSYNC is arguably the best boy band in the world, especially when you consider the recent cultural and musical influence of superstar Justin Timberlake. Ironically, back when NSYNC was in its prime, this best boy band appeared in what might be the worst Star Wars movie ever. In the 2023 episode of Hot onesthe group confirmed that it would appear first Attack of the Clones but that their cameo was eventually cut from the film.
Bye Bye Bye, NSYNC In Star Wars
Part of Hot ones' charm are good questions asked by host Sean Evans, and in this episode, he finally asked NSYNC about starring in the second Star Wars prequel. He asked if they were actually going to play Jedi Knights in the movie, and Lance Bass revealed that it wasn't the entire team that almost made a cameo appearance…just Chris Kirkpatrick, JC Chasez, and Joey Fatone. However, Kirkpatrick was quick to point out the obvious about their cameo: “it never made it to the screen.”
NSYNC members Lance Bass and Justin Timberlake have recalled their frustration at not getting an early invite to the second Star Wars prequel. “Lance and I were hotties,” Timberlake said. That prompted Bass to give an even answer: “they got cut anyway, so it doesn't matter.”
NSYNC Is Closest to Star Wars
The fact that NSYNC almost appeared in a Star Wars movie sent a wave of dissension among the fan community years ago (more on this soon), but even most die-hard fans don't realize how close the boy band came from. Attack of the Clones. They've actually received combat training, the kind that will ensure they at least look believable when thrown into the film's Battle of Geonosis climax. Joey Fatone candidly admitted that the training felt reassuring because “when we were doing the scenes,” the musicians were “…going 'voom voom' like an idiot.”
It's interesting that the only reason NSYNC was invited to appear on it Attack of the Clones The first is that the daughter of Star Wars producer Rick McCallum was a big fan of the team. The cameo was cut for two reasons, the first being SAG-AFTRA rules regarding extras. Joey Fatone later admitted that “Generally, they should have paid SAG the rights to it” and “We only signed a secret thing—which we didn't say anything about—but they had to take us out of it.”
While mysterious, Fatone's legend helps explain why NSYNC didn't appear in the second Star Wars prequel. Namely, that George Lucas and crew didn't want to have any SAG-related drama. There was another reason why they were cut, however, and it was revealed by Fatone's brother Steve back in 2015. Basically, the appearance of the band Attack of the Clones it was rumored before the movie came out, and it generated such a backlash among fans that their appearance (complete with Jedi robes and padawan braids) was canceled entirely.
In retrospect, killing Star Wars for NSYNC was the best. At that time, the fandom was already suffering from the poor quality of The Phantom Menace. After that first prequel, there was a lot of speculation about whether George Lucas had lost the creative vision that led him to create this famous galaxy far, far away in the first place. Fortunately, Lucas helped say “Bye, Bye, Bye” to that speculation by cutting the band out of the film entirely.
