California Rep. Nancy Pelosi has been hospitalized after being injured in Europe
WASHINGTON — Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) was hospitalized for evaluation after suffering injuries when she fell during an official interview while traveling with a bipartisan congressional delegation in Luxembourg, according to her spokesperson.
“Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and specialists,” her spokesman Ian Krager wrote in a statement. “He continues to work and regrets that he cannot attend the rest of the meeting [congressional delegation] conversations honoring the bravery of our servicemen during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation's history. ”
The trip to Luxembourg marks the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, which began on December 16, 1944, when German troops launched a surprise attack on Belgium and Luxembourg. Fighting with American and allied forces continued for more than a month, becoming one of the most important battles of World War II.
Krager wrote that Pelosi was honored to travel with a delegation, many of whom had family members who fought in World War II – including her uncle, Johnny.
A source familiar with the incident said Pelosi tripped shortly after taking a group photo in Luxembourg and fell. This person did not know how badly he was hurt.
Pelosi was upset that she could not continue the short trip, which the members left after the votes on Thursday and are expected to return on Sunday, the person said. Now he has to come back when he is released from the hospital.
In X's statement, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Tex.), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, expressed his disappointment that Pelosi could not continue the trip.
“I know how much he looked forward to honoring our veterans,” he wrote. “But he's strong, and I'm confident he'll be back to normal in no time. We pray for a speedy recovery.”
Members met with the Luxembourg embassy and are scheduled to visit Bastogne, Belgium.
A list of events shared with The Times said the delegation was to visit the Bastogne American Cemetery, attend a wreath-laying ceremony and attend a dinner hosted by the Luxembourg government. On Sunday they are scheduled to meet with the Luxembourg National Council before flying to Washington.
Pelosi, 84, was the first woman to become Speaker of the House and leader of the House Democratic Caucus. He resigned as Speaker last year but continues to serve in Parliament.
