Californians warned to be extra vigilant for 'Amber Alert' scam
The California Highway Patrol took to social media to warn state residents about a new scam that has gone viral.
Phone scammers posing as Amber Alert “representatives” promise to meet at homes and collect personal information to “enroll” children, a process that is not actually done.
“This is NOT how the AMBER Alert system works!” the post has been read.

Amber Alert, part of a package of child safety laws signed into law by Congress in 2003, is named after 9-year-old Amber Hagerman of Arlington, Texas, who was kidnapped and killed in 1996.
A national alert system was created to quickly notify the public of child abductions.

The CHP reiterated in its post that it is the only agency authorized to activate Amber Alerts in the state.
The agency also advises the public to never give out personal information or answer calls from “possible scam” numbers, and to notify law enforcement immediately if contacted by a scam.
